Portuguese holiday makers have voted Portimão, home to the beach resort town of Praia da Rocha, as the best holiday destination in the country.
According to a report by the Portuguese newspaper Económico, the Portugal Consumer Choice survey found that 18.8% of the Portuguese citizens who were polled chose Portimão as their top choice for a holiday in the country.
Respondents to the survey were found to be most likely to choose to visit the municipality of Portimão during July and August for a holiday in the Algarve despite many noting that at this time of the year the area was at its most busy for tourists.
While Portimão came out on top as the most chosen destination for a holiday in Portugal, the Algarve overall was the most popular region of the country for a holiday with the top five destinations in Portugal reflecting this.
Following Portimão with 18.8%, the next most popular municipality in the country was Faro, with 15.7% of the vote, then it was Ponta Delgado with 9.3%, followed by Funchal in Madeira with 6.4% and finally Loulé, home to Vale do Lobo, Quinta do Lago and Vilamoura with 4.4%.

In total 22.1% of voters chose Portimão as the municipality with the best beaches followed by Faro, Figueira da Foz, Setúbal and Loulé.
