Portugal, and especially the Algarve, has been shining brightly on the international food scene, with 38 restaurants distinguished with Michelin stars. To celebrate its impressive gastronomic landscape, the first Michelin Portugal Guide will be launched in 2024.

The new guide, which was announced earlier in June, will recognise Portugal's remarkable culinary achievements and sustainability efforts, as well as the dedication of its professionals.

“We all value our gastronomy, but especially the tourists who visit us,” says Luís Araújo, head of the Portugal Tourism Board. “The two things they most praise in Portugal are the friendliness of the people and the second is the gastronomy.”

To mark the launch, the first celebration gala will take place in the Algarve in February 2024. The event will be curated by some of the region's most talented chefs, providing guests with iconic dishes made from the finest Portuguese ingredients.

As Nuno Ferreira of the Michelin Guide Portugal explains, “this region is known for its beaches and natural beauty, but its gastronomy is an excellent factor of attraction, closely linked to the sea. Combining the qualities of the region with the international recognition of the Michelin guide is a recipe that enhances the identity of the Algarve region”.

The president of the Algarve Tourism Board, João Fernandes, agrees. “It is no coincidence that we [in the Algarve] have eight of the 38 award-winning restaurants in Portugal and that two of the seven with two stars are in the region. The region has a quality that stands out.”

The region's incredible cuisine, from Michelin-starred restaurants to simple grilled fish with a glass of local wine, is just one more reason why so many people fall in love with the Algarve. Want to know more about spending time in the region? Speak to the Algarve Home Sales team here.
