Each summer, hundreds of thousands of visitors head to the Algarve coast to get some sun, cool down and enjoy the vibes both day and night. Because of this annual influx, it's essential to ensure that everyone stays safe.
Just like in past years, the government has brought back its 'Safe Summer' programme, which aims to provide “more and better security and protection conditions for citizens or those who choose Portugal” for their summer holidays.
The 2024 programme, which is in effect between June 15 and September 15, was presented by Margarida Blasco, Minister for Home Affairs, along with the main security and civil protection authorities in Portugal.
The Minister highlighted the importance of the Public Security Police (PSP), the National Republican Guard (GNR) and Civil Protection, who are working together to provide “more integrated responses during this period” and develop “coordinated and complementary actions”.
As part of 'Safe Summer 2024', the GNR will reinforce patrolling, support and inspections in busy holiday spots, events, restaurants, bars and clubs, as well as covering main roads, borders, residences and forests.
Meanwhile, the PSP will concentrate on beach, tourist and commercial areas, nightlife hotspots and residential areas, especially those closest to popular beach resorts and which see more visitors in the peak season.
The 'Safe Summer' programme, which returns every summer in the Algarve due to the substantial increase in population, was expanded to Lisbon, Porto and other beach destinations in 2023 because of the sharp rise in tourism over the summer months.
Although summer in the Algarve is the busiest time to visit this beautiful region, destinations further inland offer peace and quiet for those looking to avoid the chaos. It's also something to consider if you're looking to make a permanent move to the Algarve.
