A year after the real estate investment option was discontinued from the Golden Visa scheme, the Portuguese government is now planning to introduce a new initiative for citizen eligibility: the Solidarity Golden Visa.
The initiative, whose launch date is yet to be approved, will shift the focus from traditional financial returns to fostering societal benefits, in an effort to contribute more to social integration and public benefit in Portugal.
The proposed Solidarity Visa will grant residency to international investors contributing at least €250,000 to social projects, including housing and integration programmes for vulnerable immigrants.
Unlike the traditional Golden Visa, which is officially called the Residence Permit by Investment (ARI), this investment route offers no financial return beyond residency benefits.
According to Luís Montenegro's government, “the objective of the new Golden Visa is to create an instrument for channeling private capital for social investment in immigrant integration projects”.
As more details emerge, the Solidarity Golden Visa is likely to appeal to investors seeking to make a meaningful impact while securing residency in Portugal. For those considering settling in regions like the Algarve, partnering with local real estate experts can be invaluable.
