International, usually over 40 years old, enthusiastic about golf, looking for a second home with three bedrooms. This is the typical property buyer in the Algarve region, according to the latest market insights.
A study conducted by Engel & Völkers looked into homebuyers' nationality, age, hobbies, preferred property type and ideal lifestyle. While there are some exceptions in specific regions, they found a few common qualities:
Nationality
Most buyers in the Algarve are non-Portuguese, predominantly British and German, but other nationalities such as Belgians, French, Americans and Canadians are starting to gain ground in the property market.
Age
Generally speaking, most investors are over 40 and still working, found the study. Areas such as Quinta do Lago, Vilamoura, Albufeira and Carvoeiro are the exception, where the age range varies from 30 to 85.
Hobbies
World-renowned for its excellent golf courses, the Algarve, unsurprisingly, attracts golf enthusiasts year-round. Besides golf, overseas homebuyers also tend to enjoy tennis and padel, which has been growing in popularity across the region.
Lifestyle
International investors are drawn to the tranquil Algarve lifestyle, with its pleasant sunny climate, privacy, safety, services and infrastructure, food and drink, and proximity to both the coast and the countryside.
Property type
The study found that most potential homebuyers are looking for villas with more than three bedrooms or apartments with two bedrooms, preferably with a sea view or close to the beach and within a 10-minute drive from the nearest town. They also tend to look for pools and gardens, especially in areas such as Quinta do Lago, Vilamoura, Albufeira and Carvoeiro.
